Resumen

The sixth volume of ALEA (Linguistic and Ethnographic Atlas of Andalusia) was published in 1973 but the materials were collected in the 1950s; recent studies contradict ALEA’s results, which suggests that its content needs to be updated. The present article outlines ALIAA’s (Atlas Lingüístico Interactivo de los Acentos de Andalucía) methodology. ALIAA aims to update the phonetic and phonological description from ALEA by describing the accent of 500 towns. The data are being collected primarily through online surveys. The audio will be analysed acoustically and statistically, and the results will be connected to a specific point on an interactive map, allowing isoglosses to be created to delimit certain phenomena. ALIAA can help us understand the extent of phonetic phenomena across Andalusia and how their geographical distribution has changed since ALEA. This article also presents some preliminary results to show that ALIAA’s methodology can help us develop linguistic atlases in a more effective way than traditional dialectology methods.
