Variation in the standard norm: the case of spoken Basque

Resumen

Standardization is crucial in the process of normalization of any language. The creation of a standard variety, a unified variant of the language, is a new tool, a new resource for speakers, which provides them with a formal variety of the language for communicative purposes, both existing or innovative. The Basque standard is known as Euskara Batua (Unified Basque). This article aims to explain the standardization of the pronunciation of Basque, understanding the creation of the norm as an external intervention that facilitates speakers to develop a speech register not previously elaborated.

The paper analyzes the variation and flexibility present in the norms for the standard pronunciation of the Basque language, pointing out the reasons and criteria (geographical and sociological) on which the Royal Academy of the Basque Language (Euskaltzaindia) was based on. Additionally, following the theoretical model of Natural Phonology, the article argues for the phonological basis of some norms. It will be shown that the decisions taken in some norms do not agree with the phonological arguments offered by Natural Phonology regarding the relation between speech registers and phonological process types.
