Emotional prosody recognition: creation and validation of an emotional corpus of sentences and pseudo-sentences in peninsular Spanish

Abstract


Recognizing emotions conveyed by prosody is an essential skill in communication, but experimental resources in Spanish remain limited. This study aimed to create and validate a corpus of auditory stimuli in peninsular Spanish designed to evaluate the identification of emotions based on voice. A speaker produced semantically neutral sentences and pseudo-sentences with intonations of anger, fear, joy, and sadness. Thirty-three Spanish-speaking evaluators took part in the online selection process for the recording. The results showed overall recognition superior to chance and variations depending on the emotion represented, with no significant differences between sentences and pseudo-sentences or based on the gender, age, or region of the participants. The resulting corpus offers a set of controlled, reliable and valid stimuli, from which those with identification rates above 80% will be selected for use in studies on children’s emotional perception.
